Exploring the Fourth Sector: The Breeze Fourth Sector for Humanity

The Spring 2022 Journalism Practicum Students, reporters and editors of The Breeze Paper at Chaffey College, were presented with a collaborative challenge and opportunity by Clark Cannedy and the Chino Chamber of Commerce.
In order to build a portfolio piece as well as experience in collaborative project building, students worked in groups to explore the emerging Fourth Sector while they constructed a profile feature on a local Non-Profit Organization of their choosing.
Serenity Ganaway, Carlos Yakimowich, and Kasey(Hill) Limón combined to form the collaboration that chose to profile Pomona Valley Habitat for Humanity, a local Non-Profit Organization that has Been focused on the mission toward sustainable affordable homeownership in their community for over thirty years.

What is the Fourth Sector?

There have traditionally been three sectors of most economies: Private (for profit), Public (governmental), and Non-Profit (for a cause).

The emerging Fourth Sector is where the goals and causes of the Public and Non-Profit sectors have began to merge with the Private (for-profit) sector.

A Look into

Pomona Valley Habitat’s History

This local chapter, or Affiliate, began with volunteers (primarily from Pilgrims Place and the United Church of Christ in Claremont) who started a fundraising committee to join Jimmy Carter’s Tijuana House Blitz. The members of that committee organized Pomona Valley Habitat for Humanity as an official California Non-Profit in 1991, they proceeded to partner with the City of San Dimas for the first Pomona Valley Habitat housing project that year.

With the aid of donations, local partnerships, and thousands of volunteers, Pomona Valley Habitat has integrated itself into the local community over the past three decades. Their service Are Spanning 16 Cities Throughout San Bernardino and Los Angeles Counties, Pomona Valley Habitat has Built and Renovated 48 Homes Since 1991. Plans for Their 49th and 50th Home are in the Works for Locations in Chino Hills.

Meet the Breeze Fourth Sector for Humanity Project Group:

SERENITY GANAWAY

I am a student at Chaffey College and am currently majoring in journalism. I wanted to be in the entertainment industry for almost all of my life, and entertainment journalism is something that I am striving for. Also, I am very skilled at gathering information and networking with people. I have established leadership skills by being the leader of a significant group project where I orchestrate the zoom meetings, be on task, and find ways to keep the communication flowing. Although there were some things that got in the way, I found ways to make our communication work. I am looking forward to learning more components in journalism as I continue my journey in this field.

CARLOS YAKIMOWICH

Carlos Yakimowich is a full-time college student who is majoring in Journalism and aims to become a sports columnist. Carlos felt a connection to sports at a very young age. He played multiple sports and his love for athletics continued to grow as he did. Growing up in the SoCal area was a huge influence on Carlos’ attachment to sports and he religiously watched and attended Laker and Dodger games growing up. Carlos wants to turn his passion for sports into a career and be even closer to the game. Check more of his work here.
